Types of Anxiety Disorders

Many people with anxiety experience symptoms of more than one type of anxiety condition, and may experience depression as well. It's important to seek support early if you're experiencing anxiety. Your symptoms may not go away on their own and if left untreated, they can start to take over your life.

There are different types of anxiety. The most common are:

1.  Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
GAD is the most common type of anxiety. The symptoms of GAD are

Constant feelings of irritation, restlessness, edginess, or a feeling that one has no control. Having low energy levels (feeling drained). Tense muscles, in the back, neck, and shoulders.

2.  Panic Disorder

It's a condition in which a person suddenly feels panicked about his or her life without any apparent reason. The episodes of panic can happen without any warning and can happen at anytime of the day. He or she will start to sweat, feel disconnected from their body, feel dizzy, the heart begins to race and even feel pain in the chest. People report a feeling of confusion and also a sense of loss - feeling as though they were going to die. Mostly, symptoms of panic attack are also similar to those of a heart attack.

3.  Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

This is rarer still than the two above, and it's precise as the name describes. One has repetitive thoughts and engage in  compulsive behaviors that they can't seem to control. Examples of repetitive behaviours are counting, checking the stove or doors, handwashing, or cleaning; these actions are repeated over and over again. 

Most people with OCD know that these so-called "rituals" make no sense, but they can't ignore or stop them. This type of anxiety disorder can be passed down through a family. If you have someone in your family with OCD, you might want to talk to a mental health professional and consider some treatments. 


4.  Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Get to the point It is usually experienced by people who have been through a traumatic event; like sexual assault, a natural disaster, a war, a shooting, loss of a loved one and anything else that can leave someone deeply scarred. They have flashbacks of the event and they keep seeing it as it happens. They suffer insomnia because when they try to sleep they relive what happened. They do show up Irritable behaviour, Being reckless or self-destructive, Being hyper-vigilant, Inability to concentrate, Exhibiting exaggerated startle response, Issues with sleep.



They tend to become emotionally withdrawn and sometimes have a deep sense of self-loathing because they think that they are to blame for what happened. 


5.  Social Anxiety

If you always find yourself having troubles in social settings or just talking with other people, you might be suffering from social anxiety. Some common symptoms you may experience in social anxiety are trembling. fidgeting, nervousness, dizziness, heart pounding, sweating and problem concentrating mostly in social situations and public places. This is a very common type of anxiety and with appropriate and timely treatment, can be managed well.
